Polar Bear Chalk Pastel Craft
Winter has so many great themes that we just love. We are always doing some theme for our activities. This week we are doing a few polar themed activities and I thought it would be fun to do one of our favorites polar bears.
I have a very simple polar bear chalk picture that you can make. It is great for a polar theme. Plus the activity takes very little time to do and can be used with different ages.

Book to Read with our Polar Bear Craft
I love the book by Gail Gibbons. She has so many great themes she has covered. She has a great one on Polar Bears. It is fun to read to learn more about the bears.
We used this book as part of our theme for the week. Plus I wanted to do a fun and quick craft that many ages can do.
What you need to make the Polar Bear Chalk Craft
- black construction paper
- chalk pastels
- white washable paints
- polar bear cookie cutter
- white cardstock (really any color of cardstock would work)
- clothespins
- cotton balls
How to make the Polar Bear Chalk Picture
You are going to see the steps we used the make the Chalk Polar Bear craft.
Step 1: We Made the Polar Bear Template
You trace the polar bear cookie cutter to make a polar bear stencil on cardstock. You can see the cookie-cutter we used and the stencil we made from it.
Step 2: Color White Where the Ice Is
You can start this either way. But we started by doing the white for the ice first with the white soft pastel. We colored where we wanted the ice to be. You could also say it was there the snow would be in the picture.
Step 3: Colored the Sky Blue with Two Colors
Then we took two colors of the blue and blended the colors. This was fun to see how the two colors would mix together to create a fun new color. And yes using the soft pastels you can make a mess with the chalk.
Step 4: Make Our Paint Brushes
Next, we made our brushes. We used a cotton balls
and clothespins to make the brush. It is a fun way to change up your painting.
Step 5: Painting the Polar Bear
Then we placed our polar bear stencil on our background. You can place it where you want it to go. The white of the stencil helps you see where to paint. You could also skip the stencil part and use the cookie cutter for this part as well.
We then used the cotton ball paintbrushes to paint the polar bear onto our picture. You could put as much or as little paint as you wanted.
