That makes place value sound really complicated, but it is not. Each digit has a value based on where it is. So if I have the number 24. Then the 2 is in the tens place, and the 4 is in the ones place. It is super easy once you understand what each place value is.
There are several terms used in place value: standard, value, expanded, and picture.

You can have several hockey pucks or just start with just a few for those just starting out. If kids need help with place value you could give them the place value bookmarks. It will with how many zero or places there are are behind each number.

So that all the tens are the second number from the right. You can do this for all the numbers with kids.
